Midway Mall complex was started in 1962.

The first structure was the Algon Ballroom. Owner Lee Hens had multiple phases of development in mind when he started this venture. Below is a timetable of changes that Midway Mall has undergone:

  • In 1962 the Algon Ballroom was built.

  • In 1975 the Gibson’s (Pamida) store was built. 

  • In 1977 16,000 sq.ft. of the Algon ballroom was converted into the Vo-Tech Community Center.

  • In 1978 the addition of the Sears, Roebuck & Co. store was added to the north of Pamida. 

  • In 1981 Godfather’s Pizza was built in the southwest corner of the complex.

  • In 1982 Burger King was added just east of Godfathers Pizza and United Telephone Co. was added to the south end of the facility. 

  • In 1986 County Market was added on toward the north end of the complex.

  • In 1988 phase III was accomplished adding several retail store locations on the north end of the facility.

  • In 1990 Midway Cinema III was built on the old Algon Ballroom site.

  • In 1991 two theater screens to were added to the theater changing it to the Midway Cinema V.

  • In 1994 two more screens were added to the theater changing it to the Midway Cinema VII

 
 
  • In 2005 a major exterior renovation and two more screens were added to the theater, now making it the Midway Cinema 9.

  • In 2008 Bennigan’s Grill & Tavern was added just South of Cinema 9 across 30th Avenue.

  • 2008 Exterior Mall Renovation - Exterior is stucco and brick. In addition to the building exterior remodel, the parking lot has landscaped islands with trees and other greenery.

  • In 2015 County Market was converted to a Cub Foods.

  • In 2015 Bennigan’s Grill & Tavern was converted to Pike & Pint Grill.

  • In 2016 the reroofing of the mall was completed.

  • In 2019 the mall parking lot was resurfaced.

  • In 2021 the large patio area with a water feature, a fireplace and a fire pit were added to Pike & Pint Grill.
